Brassy sounds of the season were in the air last Saturday in downtown Solvang, thanks to some local businesses and about a dozen music students.
Dressed in lime-green and black, Santa Ynez Valley Jazz Studio students donned Santa hats to perform lively versions of Christmas carols and other popular holiday music on trumpets, trombones, saxophones and clarinet for tourists and local shoppers.
Listeners could show their appreciation by dropping tips into a jar near the line of students.
Solvang Retailers Association sponsored the miniconcerts on the sidewalks in front of members’ businesses, said Esko K.T. Lama, president of the association that formed around the first of October.
The performances were one of the organization’s first efforts to enhance the city’s festive atmosphere and draw shoppers to the area, boosting business among the downtown shops.
