The Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association scholarship winners for the 2017 academic year are Caira Moniot, first place, and Elizabeth Brau, second place. The awards are meant to recognize achievements in the visual arts and help defray college expenses. Funds come from grants from local foundations, donations to Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association’s General Scholarship Fund and income from SYV Arts events such as QuickDraw.

Moniot attended Santa Ynez Valley Union High School (SYVUHS) where she pursued studio art studies in multiple mediums. She was president of the Art Club and active in community service. She plans to attend Santa Barbara City College (SBCC), continuing her art studies in addition to communication and journalism. The jurors were impressed with her work and noted that combining art and journalism could be a positive goal.

Brau also was a student at SYVUHS and plans to continue her education at SBCC. The jury committee admired her work with three-dimensional materials as well as other media and her tactile approach to art making. The humor exhibited in her work was also noted.

The Scholarship Program is part of Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association’s outreach to supporting arts in the community. Started in 1990, the program has funded scholarships for more than 60 local students.
