A five-day trip to San Francisco to see art museums, artist studios, private collections and art galleries is being planned by Penny Knowles, former curator of education at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and director of the Wildling Museum of Art and Nature in Solvang, and her artist and architect husband, Joseph.

Knowles is now taking reservations for the trip that will take place Friday, April 6, through Tuesday, April 10, and includes private bus transportation from Santa Barbara and Los Olivos to San Francisco and back and four nights accommodations in the historic Chancellor Hotel on Union Square.

Also included are admission and private group tours at Bay Area museums, lunches en route and a farewell dinner at an upscale restaurant in San Francisco.

The trip up will include a stop at Stanford University to tour the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts, with its renowned collection of Rodin sculptures, and the Anderson Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art.

The return trip will feature a stop at Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey and a guided tour of the new Dali17 Museum, a private collection of more than 500 original prints by the famous Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali.

In San Francisco, the group will take private tours of the Museum of the Legion of Honor, the De Young Museum and the newly expanded and remodeled San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Artist studios to be visited include LizLand, well-known mixed-media artist Liz Mamorsky’s “adult’s playhouse” packed with paintings, drawings and reclaimed materials used for her robotic sculptures, and more than 100 contemporary artist studios in one building on Bryant Street.

Knowles said the highlight of the trip will be a visit to the famous Dorothy and George Saxe Collection of Contemporary Craft, led by the collector herself, and a reception at the Russian Hill apartment of ceramic artist Trudy Evard Chiddix, formerly of Santa Barbara, and her husband, Jim.

Reservations will be accepted up to March 5. For more information and to reserve a spot, contact Knowles at Penny2ca@aol.com.
