On Friday, January 5, 2018, Our dear mother, Claudette F. Applebay passed away, surrounded by her loving family at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital. Claudette had been an active resident of Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez all of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Harry F. Applebay.
Claudette was born in Santa Barbara, on December 30, 1930, to Walter J Sevegney and the former Nannette F. Savé. Claudette's maternal side of the family had very deep roots into the historical past of Santa Barbara. These notable Santa Barbara families were the Dominguez, Romero, Orella. Cota, Juarez, Lugo, and Feliz families. Most notable of these families was her third great grandfather, Jose Maria Dominguez, who traveled with Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen when the padre established the Santa Barbara Mission in 1786. At 16 years old, Jose was a young member of the Spanish guard, accompanied by his father, Ildefanso Dominguez, a sergeant with the Spanish Presidio guard. Jose Dominguez spent his entire career as a Spanish soldier, in Santa Barbara. Jose is buried under the chapel of the Santa Barbara Mission.
Claudette spent her early years living with her mother, father and grandmother on the west side of Santa Barbara. She attended local schools, finally graduating from Catholic High School (in later years known as Bishop Diego High School) in 1950. On November 4, 1950, she married her sweetheart, Harry, at a well-attended ceremony at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
Claudette and Harry made their home in the foothills of Santa Barbara for more than 35 years. They endured the loss of their home in the 1990 Painted Cave Fire. In this home, they raised five children, Linda, Michael, David, Daniel, and Lori.
Claudette leaves behind her beloved sister, Dolores Gill of Buellton, CA; Claudette's five children, Linda Applebay of Buellton, CA, Michael (Tracy) Applebay of Yakima, WA, David (LeeAnn) of Santa Barbara, CA, Daniel (Tammy) Applebay of Orcutt, CA, and Lori Applebay of Hemet, CA. In addition, Claudette leaves behind seventeen grandchildren, nine (and one on the way) great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Claudette is preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Harry F. Applebay, her parents, and her first grandson, Michael Thornton.
For sixty five years, Claudette has been our beloved mother and the pillar of our strength. She will be dearly missed. Our sorrow is eased by the knowledge that she is with our father, Harry, and the fact that they are both in the presence of our Lord.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13th, at the Loper Funeral Chapel, 2465 Baseline Avenue, Ballard, CA. Immediately following the chapel service, there will be a graveside service at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard. A memorial reception will be held at Claudette's home, 331 Alder Lane, Buellton, following the graveside service, at approximately 12:30 p.m. January 13, 2018.
