Don Foxen was born in Los Angeles, California on May 21, 1929. He was a fifth generation Californian. After graduating from High School he joined the Marine Corps Reserve and trained at Camp Pendleton. During summer training in 1950 he was activated into service and sent to Korea. He landed with the First Marine Division at Inchon, South Korea and helped capture Seoul. The Marines eventually ended up at the Chosin Reservoir. From there he was part of the evacuation to the south. He was very proud to be one of the “Chosin Few”. After 14 months, he returned home as Sgt. Foxen.
Don met Patty Hamilton at age 15 at dancing school. They were married in February 1952 and were married for 65 years. In June, 1953 Don joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He worked his way up to the rank of Captain, commanding several Sheriff stations during his 32 year career. He was an integral part of the planning for the 1984 Olympics in LA as Commander of the Emergency Operations Bureau.
Don and Pat had six children. These children produced 12 wonderful grandchildren and, so far, 7 beautiful great grand-children.
After retiring in 1985 Don and Pat moved to Santa Ynez, where they built their dream home “Rancho Foxen” in 1981. Both became active in the Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital Auxiliary and loved it.
Don's wit resulted in many jokes and a life time love of puns. His grandchildren will always remember him for his corny jokes. Holidays were full of his war stories and political advice. He always had plenty of that to give.
He also loved to plunk away on the piano, rarely finishing a song! He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His family is comforted to know that he is with his daughter in a better place.
Mass will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 22, 2017 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Los Alamos. Private interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Santa Ynez Cottage Hospital Auxiliary.
