On Palm Sunday, March 25th, 2018, Susan Frances Miles Kelley of Santa Ynez lost her battle to cancer at the age of 75. She passed away peacefully in her sleep during the early morning hours surrounded by close family. She was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in November 2017 and was very courageous in fighting the disease. Born on July 9th, 1942 in Long Beach California, she was the daughter of Francis Earl Miles of Des Moines, Iowa and Ollie Belle Patterson of San Francisco, California. She was the oldest of four siblings, a devoted wife, mother of two, and a loving grandmother.
Susan graduated from Folsom High School in 1960 and married her husband Kenneth at Mather AFB in 1962. After the military moved them around for 20 years, they eventually settled and have resided in the Santa Ynez Valley for over 30 years. In her early years, Susan would declare her main occupation as domestic engineer and a mother who also selflessly volunteered with the American Red Cross. During the Vietnam War, she assisted the injured soldiers coming back home to Travis AFB. She obtained her dental assistant credentials (CDA/ADA) at Santa Barbara City College in 1990 and became a dental assistant in the Santa Ynez Valley for several years. She was also a regular poll worker that believed in volunteering for public citizenship duties.
She will be fondly remembered for her adventurous spirit and how she embraced life. She socialized as a red hat lady, consistently attended the local YMCA's water aerobics classes, was an avid Sudoku puzzle player, and played mahjong both in the Valley, Santa Maria, Folsom, Las Vegas and wherever she could get a seat at the table. She was also a valued volunteer and docent with the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum. Her loss will be felt throughout the Santa Ynez Valley by all of the friends she made through her many social activities. She will also be missed by the many trick-or-treaters that knew her as the witch that greeted them at her door on Halloween.
Susan is survived by her adoring husband of 56 years, Kenneth Truman Kelley; her brother Robert Miles of Brentwood, CA and sister Michelle Miles of Carson City, NV; two loving children Karl Francis Kelley of Shiloh, IL and Kristen Lee Kelley of Folsom, CA. She was preceded by her younger brother Stephen Miles of Reno, NV. At Susan's request, no services will be held.
