The end of August brought happy times to the Buellton Senior Center.
On Monday, Aug. 21, the center honored Senior Citizen Day by serving 150 free, grilled hot dog lunches with all the trimmings to seniors, who were happy to join the fun.
That event was followed by the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors honoring of Pam Gnekow, the Buellton Senior Center’s executive director. At its Tuesday, Aug. 22, meeting, the Board of Supervisors recognized Gnekow for nine years of dedication and work on behalf of seniors.
Thanks to the sponsorship of the Santa Barbara County Cattlewomen’s Association and the barbecuing talents of Rick and Alan Tomasini, a sellout crowd of about 60 enjoyed the dinner, which included a green salad with raw cauliflower and bacon bits, barbecued beef, scalloped potatoes, squash and garlic bread. Rainbow sherbet and cookies topped off the meal.
The Cattlewomen’s Association group was led by Sherry Musgrove, who noted the association has been providing dinners at the center since 1994. Helping Musgrove were Gail Knight, Jill Moulton, Gail Tomasini and Jackie Jaenicke. Center staffers Merrill Clayton, Wanda Nelson, Jim Nichols and Linda Linton volunteered their time to help with serving and cleaning up.
As the diners enjoyed their dessert, Gnekow and Jim Nichols awarded a variety of fun raffle prizes to delighted winners. Gnekow reminded everyone about the upcoming flu clinic at the center, sponsored by Rite Aid. The clinic is scheduled for Sept. 13. Sign-ups for the Senior Dinner on Sept. 26, sponsored by the Los Olivos Rotary, were encouraged. On Sept. 14, a Lunch Buddies trip to the Santa Barbara Zoo is scheduled, with lunch from Woody’s Barbecue.
