Bien Nacido Vineyards edged out more than 50 other pinot noir wines with its 2012 Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir in the Omaha, Nebraska, competition Pinot, Pigs & Poets on June 1. Master Sommelier and Bien Nacido Estate Brand Manager Will Costello was present to accept the award.

Pinot, Pigs & Poets is a benefit for Omaha nonprofit Completely KIDS, and has become one of Omaha's premier wine and food events.

"(Bien Nacido) is nice and balanced and primarily fruit forward. It’s small production, very well made, a lot of care taken. They know what they’re doing," Sarah Wallace said.

Wallace served on a panel of judges who blind tasted each wine prior to the evening’s public wine tasting and pork sampling. The winner was announced during the event.

Bien Nacido Vineyards is located in the Santa Maria Valley. It has a tasting room in Los Olivos.

Other participating Central Coast wineries were Babcock Winery & Vineyards, Belle Glos, Lincort, Loring Wine Company, Presqu'ile Winery, Solomon Hills Vineyard, Stasis and Zotovich.

Proceeds of $315,000 were raised at the eighth annual fundraiser and will specifically benefit the Completely KIDS weekend and after-school food programs, which fight to end childhood hunger.
