A new wine club, with operations based in Buellton, has been formed to benefit nonprofit organizations around the country. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Santa Barbara County is the first local organization to sign on.

C4K Wine Club is the brainchild of Doug Margerum, owner and director of winemaking at Margerum Wine Company, who came up with the concept of a wine club to benefit nonprofits along with two friends in the whisky import business. "Drink wine, do good" is the club's motto.

Subscribers to the club get a wine shipment each month, ranging from $49.99 for three bottles to $199.99 for 12 bottles, including shipping. The wines are curated by a group of experts including local winemaker/sommelier Rajat Parr; Master Sommelier, author and educator Brian McClintic; Master Sommelier and speaker Catherine (aka the "grape goddess") Fallis; and Margerum.

None of the wines they select each month are available otherwise to county consumers. They are all imported by Margerum, with no middle man adding to the cost.

They are all "restaurant quality" wines, Margerum said. That means they are lower in alcohol than many wines and are "wines that goes with food."

"With every shipment you get information about the nonprofit you're supporting," Margerum added. You also get background on the wine itself and what foods go with it.

Most importantly, 50 percent of the net proceeds go to the designated nonprofit organization. That works out to about 10 percent of the purchase price.

"It's a great feeling to know you're doing good while drinking great wines," Margerum added.

CASA trains volunteers who are sworn in by a juvenile judge to advocate on behalf of abused or neglected children in court. They meet with the child, family members, teachers, foster parents and others, gathering facts for the court to assist the judge in determining what's best for the child.
