Los Olivos school facing big budget cuts

Four teachers at Los Olivos Elementary School could receive pink slips and the drama, music and sports programs could be eliminated at a special school board meeting tonight as the district decides how to cut an estimated $200,000 from its budget.

The alternative is to find new sources of funding, Superintendent Marsha Filbin said.

“We don’t want to cut any teacher or program, but there simply just isn’t the money to keep them if we don’t get help from the parents or the community,” Filbin said.

Education volunteer trying to save the environment

Karen Palmer hopes the board game she created will help children and parents understand the importance of environmental education and be used as a tool for teachers to increase science test scores.

“Education is the missing link between the condition of the world, because environmental education has been de-valued until recently. When you explain how to recycle and ways it helps the Earth, children get inspired to help,” she said.

Palmer will be honored April 17 as the Valley Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year for Education. As part of the award, she will receive a $500 grant from the foundation to be donated to a charity of her choice.
