An emu that escaped from OstrichLand in Buellton was rescued last Tuesday after crossing both north- and southbound lanes of Highway 101, said Julia Di Sieno of Animal Rescue Team, which assisted in the bird’s recovery.

Di Sieno said OstrichLand staff, assisted by ART and California Highway Patrol officers from the Buellton office, corralled the bird in thick poison oak west of Highway 101.

A sock was placed over the emu’s head to keep it calm while it was pulled from the poison oak and loaded into a horse trailer for the ride back to OstrichLand, where it was checked out by ART’s veterinarian.

Di Sieno said the bird suffered only superficial lacerations during its flightless flight from OstrichLand.
