Alvin Salge, commander of Solvang Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7139, is looking for World War II veterans who served in, near or over France to receive the French Legion of Honor medal.
The French ambassador to the United States regularly honors American veterans of World War I and World War II with the medal, paying tribute and expressing gratitude to those who risked their lives defending liberty, Salge said.
Foreign nationals who have served France or the ideals it upholds may receive the distinction of the Legion of Honor.
Previous American recipients include generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur and Adm. Michael Mullen, Salge said.
World War II veterans who qualify should contact Salge at 693-9133 or firstname.lastname@example.org to obtain forms for confirming their service in France to submit to France’s consul general in Los Angeles.
VFW Post 7139 will setup an awards ceremony in the spring in Solvang where the French consul general will award the medals, Salge said.
