Defending against Day Zero

Last year 4th District Supervisor Peter Adam led a tour to the big desalination plant in Carlsbad, which opened in December of 2015. This plant makes 50 million gallons of fresh water daily from the Pacific Ocean.

The plant's motto is: "The Pacific is Now on Tap!"

"We make clean, safe water from a drought-proof source - the ocean," says the Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad plant, "... the largest, most technologically advanced and energy-efficient seawater desalination plant in the United States."

Four million resident Cape Town, South Africa didn't have Carlsbad's foresight. Now they are less than three weeks from "Day Zero" when water is completely gone. They have no options.

While Carlsbad had foresight for Southern California, Central California is more like Cape Town - no plans for our Day Zero. Today we're already back in "Severe Drought."

2nd District San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Bruce Gibson and fellow board members snubbed a Cal Poly talk by Chief Engineer Sam Kramer of the world's leading desalination company, IDE Technologies, who built the Carlsbad plant. Supervisors and other officials were too busy and too disinterested to attend.

The vast majority of climate scientists say additional green house gas of CO2, methane and other fossil fuels waste a hotter earth, which in turn means more drought that eventually stifles agriculture.

Government was created to protect us from catastrophes we can't defend against individually. Yet our California governments do nothing to address the obvious on-rushing threat of Day Zero.

Are we on the Central Coast determined to be another Cape Town staring Day Zero in the face with no idea what to do?

One thing we can do - elect people who will defend us from Day Zero.

Party affiliation superseding intellect

A recent letter writer expressed that she was brought to tears watching the State of the Union address because Democrat politicians were not paying respect to our tin-pot dictator, Trump.

Trump has accused those politicians of being treasonous for not standing and clapping to inflate his needy ego at the event. However, he and Republicans like the letter writer forget that from the first day of President Obama's first term, Mitch McConnell vowed that his GOP group would not work with him.

This vow was obviously a treasonous act as it was against our country's success. In spite of the endless GOP negativity throughout his two terms in office, President Obama succeeded in bringing the country out of the brink of depression and brought down the high unemployment rate that his Republican predecessor left. President Obama has been elevated by historians to rank high among past presidents, whereas Trump, with the daily chaos, is working to rank among the worst.

It is incomprehensible how most on the political right allow ideology and party affiliation to supersede intellect and don't recognize that their dear leader, except for Putin, is not respected by other international politicos, because all they see on display is an egotistical braggart, lying, moron who is an embarrassment to our nation.
