This was, a spectator said, a "friendship match."
"We've known each other since 'pee wees'," Chloe Bellomy said after she defeated her friend Zoe Miller 6-1, 6-2 for the Girls 14 Singles Division championship. The title match Monday morning was part of the Iversen Motors Santa Maria Junior Grand Prix Tournament at the Santa Maria Country Club.
Bellomy and Miller are both from Santa Barbara. Bellomy will be a freshman at Santa Barbara High School this coming school year and plans to play tennis there. Miller will be an eighth grader at Santa Barbara Junior High School.
"We play in a lot of the same tournaments," said Miller. The girls said they do other activities together as well.
"We're the two 'es'," Bellomy said. "Chloe and Zoe."
Besides being friends, the two used similar playing styles. Both used two-fisted backhands and both liked to hit groundstrokes from the baseline.
The rallies became longer as the match went on, but Bellomy won most of them.
Sunday, Bellomy and partner Jennifer Beckerman earned the Girls 14 Doubles championship by defeating Jessica Hinds and Whitney Ranger 6-2, 6-2.
Chloe Bellomy's sisters Charlotte and Chelsea won the Girls 12 Doubles championship by beating Hayley Hranicky Galitzer and Arabella Waters. No final score was available.
Unlike the Bellomy-Miller match, most of the title matches involved players from disparate areas. Many players from eastern states competed in the tournament, which involved approximately 200 youngsters according to tournament officials.
However, at press time all the singles division champions were Californians.
