There are a number of huge games tonight. Some of those are in our area and others feature area teams playing in other counties.

I think the big 11-man game tonight is at Santa Maria, where the Saints host the Conqs.

Santa Maria is 1-1 and coming off its 47-26 loss at Santa Barbara. A win over the Dons last week would've been another statement made by the Saints, but they came up short. They are not allowed another slip-up.

They have to win tonight and winning big will really boost their confidence and momentum heading into next week's rivalry game against Righetti, which will be another highly-motivated team after losing at home to the Saints last year.

Cabrillo on the other hand is 0-2 and has been beaten up pretty badly in both its losses. The Conquistadores are coming off a 65-0 loss at Dos Pueblos.

They will be hyped up to hand their new coach AJ Pateras his first win as the head man in Vandenberg.

Cabrillo won last year's matchup 22-15, a game many have said Santa Maria should've won. Both these guys are former LPL rivals as well, so they know each other pretty well.

This is a big game with big implications on both sides.

Switching over to the 8-man side is Orcutt Academy's pivotal game against Mojave, the defending CIFSS Division 1 champion. We'll be calling that game live at santamariatimes.com. (Pre-game show starts at 6:45 p.m.). I'm going with the Spartans in that one, although you never really know what's going to happen in 8-man.

Then the big game with an area team playing out of town is St. Joseph's game at St. Bonaventure. The Knights are 1-1 coming off they're big win over Righetti last week.

St. Bonaventure is also 1-1 and is known as a Ventura County power. The two teams played last year at St. Joseph and Chuck Wick ran wild over the Knights. But Wick is no longer there. And this Seraphs team is a lot different than last year's.

I wouldn't be surprised is St. Joseph comes back with a win and that would give the Knights a lot of momentum heading into next week's home game against Bishop Diego.

In other news, Righetti also faces a big test at home against a red-hot Dos Pueblos team. Not sure if the Warriors can keep up with the Chargers but a win there for Righetti would be huge and help them as they play Santa Maria next week.

I think Arroyo Grande is going to get on track tonight in Bakersfield against Independence, which isn't one of the better Bakersfield-area teams.
