L.D. and Helen McVeigh, former residents of the Santa Ynez Valley who now live in Las Vegas, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Dec. 27. The McVeighs were married in Maysville, Oklahoma, in 1947. In 1948 they moved to California, where they worked in agriculture in Ventura. In 1950, their only child, John Ray McVeigh was born. In 1956, they relocated to Santa Ynez, where L.D. became the manager of Rancho Laguna Ranch, owned by the Sedgwick family.
He served in that capacity for the next 37 years, during which time they made many friends and enjoyed a great social life at the local Sportsman’s Club and Elk’s Lodge. In 1993, the McVeighs leased Rancho Laguna themselves. They farmed the ranch for the next three years. In 1996 they retired and moved near their son in Nevada. The McVeighs remain active and enjoy giving their famous barbecues. In fact, their favorite quote is: “It is not a Barbecue unless it is a Santa Maria Barbecue.”
