Barbara Jean Nyenhuis Klassen was born on February 23, 1934 in Freeborn, Minnesota and passed away in Solvang on May 5, 2019 due to pneumonia and complications from advanced dementia.
Barbara was an avid reader and had fond memories of being the neighborhood storyteller in her youth. On February 18, 1955, she married Clarence “Chuck” Klassen. A stay-at-home mother of two, Barbara had many talents. She took art classes and was known for her watercolor and acrylic paintings of barns, old houses, and landscapes; she also enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and decorating. She loved to go camping, and enjoyed riding on the back of Chuck's motorcycle or in their sidecar.
While living in Eureka, Barbara earned her real estate license. Barbara and Chuck eventually retired to Santa Maria where, for several years, Barbara served as the leader of the local chapter of Bible Study Fellowship.
In 2013, Barbara moved to Solvang Friendship House where she was known for her kindness and positive spirit. Barbara is survived by her two children, Peggy Kelly and Tim Klassen; their spouses, Rick Kelly and Sherry Klassen; and her two grandchildren, Dawson and Davis Kelly. A memorial service will be held on October 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Solvang.
