Carol Ann Elise Burtness passed away unexpectedly December 8, 2018, at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California, surrounded by her loving family. Carol Ann Elise Umland was born to William and Aagot Umland in Luverne, Minnesota, on February 27, 1939. She went to school in Hills and Magnolia, Minnesota, graduating at the top of her class. Four years later she graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, with a music major, and she also met the love of her life, Paul Burtness, during this time.
After graduation Carol moved to Los Angeles for two years and taught special education while attending UCLA. She then moved to Solvang and continued teaching at the elementary school. On June 20, 1964, Carol married Paul Burtness in Luverne Minnesota surrounded by friends and relatives from all over the country. Everything was perfect, and Paul even found a horse and buggy to bring his wife to the reception.
The next 52 years Paul and Carol lived in the Santa Ynez Valley. Carol continued teaching until her children were born and when their youngest was in junior high, she embarked on a new adventure which lasted 15 years. She opened a store in Solvang primarily catering to children, The Lolly Shop.
Carol was a true leader, active in many organizations and activities throughout the years: Bethania Lutheran Church, Farstrup-Mortensen Lecture Series, Santa Barbara Women's Community Art Association, American Field Service, Shelter Services for Women, PEO, and the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society.
Carol was the epitome of a “classy lady.” In addition to her musical, organizational, and business talent, she was a gourmet cook, and a gracious hostess often entertaining large groups in their home at the drop of a hat. She had the incredible ability to juggle kids, organizations, work, and support Paul in his business.
Family was always Carol's Number 1 priority in life. She is survived by her three children: William (Tucson, Arizona); Georgette (Buellton, California); and Jeremy, his wife Emily, and Carol's special grandson, Nathan (Ramona, California). She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Pam and Dan Rohr, and many more loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul and her sister Linda Holte. Carol Burtness was an amazing role model that will be deeply missed.
A Memorial Funeral Service was held at 11:00am on Saturday, December 15 at Bethania Lutheran Church in Solvang.
