Denise "Nisie" Marie Birkholm

It is with great sadness that the family of Denise “Nisie” Marie Birkholm announces her passing on April 6, 2018. At age 66 she passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Nisie was born on May 25, 1951 in Wasco, WA to Thomas and Zita Nielsen and moved to Solvang soon after. She attended Solvang Elementary School and Santa Ynez High School, graduating in 1969. Denise married Hans 46 years ago, in 1971, and together they had 3 children and six grandchildren; Erik (1974), Alan (1977 ) and Karine (1981).

A native of Solvang, Denise was committed to serving the community. Unbeknownst to those who didn't know her best, she served a lifetime of philanthropy. Among other activities, she supported the Vikings of Solvang fundraising events, was a leader in the Solvang 4-H Club and was a board member of the Solvang Danish Days Foundation, taking an active part in putting on the town's annual Danish Days festivities. Her work benefited the community in dynamic ways, inspiring young people and developing cultural awareness in the community.

Denise's greatest joy was centered around family and friends, with her time spent locally and in Northern California. Her kind and loving spirit impacted so many in the community, and her loss will be felt greatly. Nisie will be forever remembered by her family and many dear friends as an excellent cook, artist, and gardener. But her greatest joy by far was being a grandmother. She spent much of her time helping care for six young grandchildren.

She is survived by husband, Hans, sons Erik and Alan (Erika), daughter Karine (Peter), and six grandchildren (Kaeley, Sydney, Kelsey, Oliver, Colin and Maxwell). She is also survived by her mother, Zita, and brother, Steve, and welcomed to Heaven by her father Thomas, brother Micheal and her best friend Rose Skytt.

Memorial will be held on May 19, 2018 at 11:00 at Nojoqui Falls Park Area B . Lunch to follow. Please RSVP on Facebook Denise Birkholm Memorial event or email In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Viking Charities, the Solvang Danish Days Foundation, or you're a charity of choice.
