Lelah Sonaty

Memorial services for Lelah F. Sonaty, 78, of Buellton will be held at a later date in Hammond, Ind., with burial in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville. Ms. Sonaty died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital.

Ms. Sonaty was born in Hammond on Aug. 9, 1926, and had worked as a secretary after her children were grown. She moved to Buellton in 1999.

Survivors include her children, Cheryl Photenhauer of Hammond, Patricia Sonaty of Washington, D.C., Sandra Witcher of Buellton, Wayne Duncanson of Hammond, Warren Sonaty Jr., of Evergreen, Colo., Fred Shinkle of Tularosa, N.M., Patrick Shinkle of Oakland, Neb., and Anthony Sonaty of Munster, Ind.; sisters, Norma Eberle of Racine, Wis., and Laura Shropshire of Hammond; brother, Lloyd Wyant of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Sonaty, and a son, Warren Duncanson.

Lotus M. Downs

A memorial service was held for Lotus M. Downs, Sept. 24, 2004, at Hudson's Funeral Home in Pinedale, Wyo. She died on Sept. 19, 2004, at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City of complications from cancer surgery.

Born in San Francisco on Aug. 22, 1921, she graduated from Santa Ynez High School in 1939. She married Nielson Downs of Los Olivos on Sept. 9, 1940. She was an active 50-year member of the Eastern Star of the Santa Ynez Valley and a past worthy matron. Both sides of her family were Vaqueros on some of the large land grant ranches in early Spanish California.

Ms. Downs was preceded in death by her husband, Nielson, in 2001.

Survivors include her sons Bill of Golden, Colo., and Tom of Pinedale, Wyo.; sister, Maxine O'Keefe of Santa Maria; brothers, Richard Mawkins of El Cajon and Fred Mawkins of Paso Robles.

D. Edwina McGuire

Funeral services are being planned for D. Edwina McGuire, who died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

A homemaker, Edwina McGuire was also a clothing buyer for retail clothing stores, locally Ann's Place and the Solvang Childrens Boutique. She was born in Alabama, Nov. 17, 1932. A resident of Buellton, McGuire and her family moved to the Santa Ynez Valley in 1972 from Cocoa Beach, Fla. Edwina McGuire was a graduate of Auburn University.

Survivors include her husband, Joe M. McGuire; daughter, Sue Claus, and her children, Aaron and Alyssa Claus; son, Jack McGuire and his children, Brandon, Jason and Megan McGuire.

Mabel Lucille Petersen

Funeral services were Friday Nov. 12, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Solvang, for Mabel Lucille (Nedegaard) Petersen, 89, who died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. A reception followed in the Parish Hall. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard.

Born in Newel, Iowa, Jan 24,1915, Mabel and Hans Petersen moved from Askov, Minn., to Solvang in 1934. The Petersens owned and operated the Solvang Laundry for 37 years. Mabel Petersen was also a postal worker for the Solvang Post Office for 20 years.

Survivors include her son, E. Howard Petersen of Indio, Calif., three sisters, Lucille Wulff, Cora Vandecar, and Irene Carstensen, all of Solvang, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband, Hans, in 1992, and sons, Arden in 1999 and Dale in 1969.

Friends may remember Mabel Petersen with contributions to Bethania Lutheran Church, or the Solvang Lutheran Home in her name.
