Mary Nero will lead a beginners sewing class for adults from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Santa Ynez Valley Presbyterian Church in Ballard.
"A lot of women are taking up sewing, they've purchased a machine, but aren't familiar with it. We'll start with how to thread the machine and go from there," said Nero, who is experienced at teaching children and adults.
Sewing-machine sales are booming, according to SVP Worldwide, the maker of Singer sewing machines. More than 3 million units a year are being sold, up 50 percent from a decade earlier. TV shows like "Project Runway" and the website Pinterest are said to have influenced many women -- and a few men -- in their 20s and 30s to take up sewing.
Nero's class is limited to 12 students, who will need to bring their own machine. Nero will email each registered student a list of necessary supplies and where they can be purchased. Each student will leave with a decorative pillow of their own making.
Cost of the class is $20, which includes lunch.
"I've been sewing since I was 4 years old. I knit and crochet," Nero said. "It's fun."
