It’s always wise to be nice to your sweetheart. With that Valentine’s Day tip in mind it’s especially important to be good to your own heart.

Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital is celebrating heart goodness with free health screenings during National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week.

“This time of year, around Valentine’s Day, we are all focused on matters of the heart,” said Marsha Griggs, RN-BC, CCRP and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation coordinator at SYV Cottage Hospital. “It’s the best time to make sure you are smart about your heart health.”

Healthy questions

Do you know your “heart health” numbers?

How do you measure up compared to “120 over 60”?

Is a “total cholesterol” result of 200 good, or bad, for you?

Find out what these numbers mean at a free heart health event on Thursday, Feb. 15 from noon to 2 p.m. SYV Cottage Hospital’s cardiopulmonary rehabilitation department is promoting heart health with free screenings, tours and an opportunity to meet heart health experts.

The free event will be held at the cardiac rehabilitation facility adjacent to SYV Cottage Hospital in Solvang. Attendees will be able to tour the facility as well as meet with staff, including Griggs.

“It’s important to know your heart health numbers for blood pressure and cholesterol and to identify your personal cardiac risk profile,” she said. “Then you can make ‘SMART’ changes.”

SMART stands for changes that are specific, measurable, adjustable, realistic and time-based, Griggs explained.

The hospital’s registered dietitian, Stacey Bailey, will also be available to give nutrition advice for optimum heart health. Free blood pressure readings and free cholesterol checks will be available, as well.

Reservations are required for the cholesterol tests; space is limited. To secure a test time call toll-free: 1-888-999-8262.
