Chloe Monahan, Rene Martinez, Rotary scholarship

Chloe Monahan, a graduate of Santa Ynez Valley Union High School, was presented with a $500 scholarship this year for her leadership skills and involvement in Rotary through the high school’s Interact Club.

Monahan, who was recognized for the honor by Rotary President Rene Martinez at a club meeting in July, is currently attending Santa Barbara City College.

Prior to graduation, she received the 2016 Global Leadership Connection Conference's Santa Barbara Female Youth Leader of the Year Award.

She was also the editor of the SYVUHS yearbook and the leader of the Interact Club, which gives students ages 12 to 18 the chance to make a difference in their communities and the world while having fun, Martinez said.

Every Interact club carries out two service projects a year: one that helps its school or community and one that promotes international understanding, he said.

Through the club, students have the opportunity to attend international events and join a Rotary Youth Exchange.

Money for the Rotary scholarship was raised through local fundraisers conducted throughout the year, including the Rotary Club of Buellton Golf Tournament, snack and hot chocolate sales at Buellton's Winter Fest, and the sale of unique and new varieties of plants at Windmill Nursery.
