Teddi Steyer, a devoted wife and mother as well as an accomplished artist from the Central Coast of CA, known for her work as a layerist in multi-media, died January 21, 2019 at Atterdag Village of Solvang, CA. She was 88.
Teddi was born as Theodora Francis Herrmann to John and Amalia Herrmann in Lincoln City, NE, and graduated from Harris Teachers College in St. Louis, MO. She married Martin Steyer, a Lutheran minister, in 1951, and served faithfully as a pastor's wife for over 60 years, in numerous places throughout the United States. They lived in Santa Maria, CA from 1999-2014, where they were active members of Lutheran Church of Our Savior. In 2014, Teddi and Martin moved to Atterdag Village of Solvang, where they were members of Bethania Lutheran Church.
Teddi found ways to work on her art while raising three children, being a classroom teacher, and later, a business manager for Century 21 in Mobile, AL. When Martin and Teddi accepted a call to ministry in Roanoke, VA, Teddi had the opportunity to study printmaking with Chiong Yiao Chen, a renowned print maker, at Macon Randolph Women's College.
For the past 20 years, Teddi lived in the Central Coast area of CA and was represented occasionally at a number of galleries, including Gallery Los Olivos, The Village Gallery in Arroyo Grande, San Louis Obispo Museum of Art, The C Gallery in Los Alamos, and Town Center Gallery in Santa Maria.
Teddi loved gardening as well as hiking and beachcombing, always returning with rocks, shells, driftwood—even a snakeskin—treasures from the natural world to incorporate into her art. Of her work, Teddi wrote:
“As the design, impression, story in my work emerges, the layers are much like life itself. What has gone before shines through the present moment. The succeeding layers add new perspective- a new dimension to the whole. Often the surprising moment of the piece is like a bit of hope held in the heart!”
Teddi will be missed by her loving husband of 67 years, Martin, her children Marty (Patty) of Bainbridge Island, WA; Peter (Dee) of Ventura, CA; and Julie (Tom) of Santa Maria, CA; and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her sisters, Jo Lutz of Lawrence, KS; and Mollie Rhode of St. Louis, MO; and her brother Frank Herrmann of Orange County, CA also survive her.
The memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday February 9, 2019, at Bethania Lutheran Church, 603 Atterdag Rd., Solvang, CA 93463. Family will receive friends at Bethania Church after the service. Memorials can be made to Bethania Lutheran Church, Solvang; or Atterdag Village of Solvang.
