Guest Commentary: How beholden is the Santa Maria school board to an earlier generation of leaders which decades ago adopted a logo to represent the heritage, mission, students and staff of its education system?
DEAR ABBY: I recently met a man, and I have fallen in love with him. He says he feels the same way and tells me often that I treat him better than anybody ever has.
H. Dennis Beaver: “All of my employees are overweight and several, morbidly obese, including me. When photos of people who die from COVID are shown on the news, almost all are obese and that scares me.”
CalMatters Commentary - California’s elected sheriffs are feeling the heat in an era of heightened activism on criminal justice reform.
DEAR ABBY: I am a senior male. I understand I may have some beliefs that others find old-fashioned. However, I consciously try to be tolerant of others' feelings and beliefs. That said, my problem is with my younger brother, who is a homosexual. I have always tried to ignore that side of his life and, consequently, we have always had a good relationship. He lives in another state, so we only talk on the telephone.
Dear Doctor: Our daughter is 5 months old, and we always put her to sleep on her back. Lately, when we check on her, she's on her stomach. Should we be keeping an eye out and positioning her on her back again when that happens?
THOMAS ELIAS The utility bailout plan known as AB 1054 has looked worse and worse for consumers since California legislators passed it in July 2019 under pressure from Gov. Gavin Newsom and lobbyists for Pacific Gas & Electric Co., Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric.
ON THE FARM After a few days of summerlike temperatures of near 90 degrees, I woke up this morning, Holy Saturday, to fog and much cooler temperatures outside. As usual I made some coffee and took advantage of the early morning quiet of the house.
DEAR ABBY: I'm a single mom. I have a man in my life who I have been with for almost four years. He went through a bad divorce during the time we got together, and anytime I try to mention marriage in the future, he gets upset. I'm unsure what to do or how to respond anymore.
DEAR ABBY: I have grown really close to "Pete," my trainer at the gym I joined two years ago. We are both married. I know it's wrong to feel this way. I love my husband, but I'm not sure I am "in love" with him anymore.
DEAR ABBY: I have been married to my husband for seven years. We are in our 60s. He refuses to make a will. He tells me what he "would" put in his will and asks me if I am OK with his wishes.
A reader with a petite friend wondered whether coronavirus vaccines should be tailored to a person's physical size.
Guest Commentary - Am I the only one who feels like I'm living in an old-fashioned monster movie, with mobs of chanting peasants bearing pitchforks and torches as they march upon on a dark, foreboding castle? Or am I just spending too much time watching TV news and reading about politics online?
DEAR ABBY: At the age of 30, I recently had to move back with my parents. I am not the tidiest person in the world, but I thrive on the saying, "Dust, not dirt."
Dear Heloise: We have discovered a great use for last year's Christmas tree. We placed it outside, as close as possible to the birdfeeder. The birds used it as shelter between feedings. It also served as a prop for suet cake holders, which the birds love. Of course, here in New England we make sure the birdfeeders are down no later than March 31 so as to be gone before the black bears come out of hibernation. Bears love the seeds almost as much as the birds. -- Paul S., Middlebury, CT
H. Dennis Beaver: "My 16 year-old-daughter announced that she and a friend are in the process of becoming internet influencers. They have been in discussions with a small, local company that manufactures specialty dog and cat food – that we have been feeding to our pets - and they want these girls to advertise it. How risky is this?"
CalMatters Commentary - California’s system of compensating workers for job-related disabilities is due for another decennial battle and it may be happening.
DEAR ABBY: I'm a young wife. I married after three months of dating my military husband. He was previously in an on-again/off-again relationship that lasted about eight years, during which she had a baby with another man, etc. I believe my husband is still in love with her. After constantly asking him, he says he just wishes her well and he doesn't have any romantic feelings. I'm not sure what to do, and I just keep overthinking it. Any thoughts? -- HATES HUSBAND'S HISTORY
Dear Doctor: A friend from work needs surgery for lung cancer. He was doing breathing exercises, which he said was part of prehab -- something I've never heard of. I don't want to bother him with questions, but am curious: What's prehab, and why would it be important?
Guest Commentary: As California faces another dry year, the state will have to decide whether to allow the violation of water quality standards in the Delta.
