CORONA — For the second time in three years, the Dunn boys soccer team is a CIF Southern Section divisional champion.
The Earwigs held off Adelanto for a 3-2 win Saturday in the Division 6 championship game at Corona High School. Dunn won the Division 7 title in 2015.
Los Olivos-based Dunn, the Condor League champion, finished 15-1-1. Adelanto won the Desert Sky League title. The Saints wound up 10-4-7.
In the 2015 Division 7 title game, Dunn took a 2-0 lead and then hung on for a 2-1 win over Laguna Blanca at San Marcos High School.
Saturday, two goals by Alpha Sowe and then another by Rodney Michael, a standout for the 2015 Division 7 championship team, staked the Earwigs to a 3-0 halftime lead. Then they saw the Saints score twice in the second half.
"In the first half it just seemed so easy," Dunn coach Mark Geriak said in a phone interview. "In the second half, we kind of lost our way a little bit. But we hung on."
Adelanto senior Peter Arellano came into the game Saturday with 20 goals in 15 games.
"I think he was the one who scored their two goals," said Geriak. "He was quite a man out there among guys. We had trouble matching up against that kind of physical presence."
Dunn goalkeeper Brima Amarana helped his team preserve its lead.
"In the second half, he came out three times on (Adelanto) crosses to win the ball."
The Earwigs got to the championship game by beating La Canada 4-1 on penalty kicks in the semis. The game was scoreless after regulation and overtime. The Saints got into the title game by edging Brentwood 4-3.
Dunn became the second Santa Ynez Valley team this winter to win a sectional divisional title. The Santa Ynez girls water polo team beat Diamond Bar 8-6 in overtime Feb. 25 to win the Division 7 championship.
Geriak said this is it for his team for the season.
"There will be the regional playoffs, but we're not doing it," he said. "It's good to end the season with a win. This is a lot of fun for a small school like this."
The CIF State Championship brackets were released on Sunday and the Earwigs were not listed in the Division V bracket. Adelanto is the third seed in the division and took on El Cajon Valley on Tuesday.
