The Santa Ynez Pirates fell to the Mission Prep Royals 46-45 in their season opener at Atascadero High School.

Playing on the opening night of the annual Ruth Dozier Tournament, the Pirates were led by Sarah Perkins with 14 points and Grace Padilla with 10.

“The game was close throughout,” said Santa Ynez head coach Mike Alexander during a telephone interview after the game. “We scored with 11-seconds left in the game to go ahead 45-44 but they got a bucket with 4-seconds left to re-take the lead. We got off a shot at the buzzer but it didn’t go in.

“We had a 5-point lead heading into the fourth quarter but they were able to get a handful of offensive rebounds to get back in the game. It was only our first game and I was happy with the girls’ effort.”

Santa Ynez continues play in the Dozier Tournament Friday night with a game against host Atascadero.
