Santa Ynez's Tyler Rasmussen, seen as he hits a run-scoring single to center field in last week's game against Santa Barbara, sparked a game-winning rally against San Marcos on Monday.

The Santa Ynez baseball team was up against it Monday as the Pirates trailed San Marcos 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning in a Channel League road game.

Then, as Santa Ynez coach Warren Dickey put it, the Pirates came back after being "dead in the water."

The Pirates (5-3-1, 2-2) beat the Royals with a five-run seventh inning in a Channel League game at San Marcos, winning 6-5.

"It was quite the rally," Dickey said. "A season-saver type of thing.

"We came from dead in the water to winning a league game on the road."

Tyler Rasmussen got the comeback going with a two-run single. Brock Dix put the Pirates ahead with another single, and Logan Ast singled in the eventual winning run.

San Marcos reliever Isaac Villareal, the eventual losing pitcher, hit a solo homer off Santa Ynez closer Merek Mercado in the bottom of the inning, but Mercado eventually got the last out to earn the win.

The Earwigs scored a win over the Pirates Monday as Ian Valdez and Ethan Cloyd combined for a shutout, allowing three hits while striking out seven batters.

Brandon Lawrence and Ben Abelman each had doubles and collected two hits on the day for the Earwigs.

In another game that was moved up due to Tuesday's weather, the Pirates scored another Channel League victory as Armani Garcia struck out 10 batters and allowed six hits in the win.

The Pirates are 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Channel League.

Freshman Lily Martinez had two hits and three RBIs for Santa Ynez. Maggie Usher, the Pirates' senior catcher, also had two hits.
