Orcutt American Little League's tournament debut was a success.
Orcutt American edged Santa Maria Southside 2-1 on Ryan Davidson's two-run single in the third inning of their District 65 All-Star Tournament Little League Division game at C.C. Oakley Park Wednesday night.
Orcutt American is 1-0 in Pool B. Southside is 0-2.
Southside grabbed a 1-0 lead on Kji Hamill's home run in the top of the second inning. Hamill belted a pitch over the left field fence for Southside's first run of the tourney.
Orcutt American rallied in the bottom of the third. Winning pitcher Zack Singletary led off with an infield single, then advanced to second base on a groundout.
Casey Harms beat out a slow infield roller and Singletary moved to third base. After a strikeout, Davidson hit an 0-2 pitch solidly on the ground up the middle to score Singletary and pinch runner Shane Conway.
Rodrigo Jimenez, who struck out eight batters and allowed just three hits as a pitcher in Southside's tournament opener, nearly won the game for Southside in the fifth inning.
With two runners on base and two outs, he hit a pitch deep to center field. But Orcutt American centerfielder Tommy Kam caught the ball a few feet in front of the fence.
The game was a good pitcher's duel between Singletary and Southside's Christian Perez. Perez pitched a three-hit complete game. Singletary allowed four hits in his five innings of work.
Stephen Buehring retired Southside in order the last inning. He struck out the last two batters.
Singletary struck out eight and walked no one.
Perez struck out only four batters, but he got a lot of ground ball outs as his fielders played solidly. The one error Southside made was inconsequential.
Orcutt American was errorless in a game that lasted just one hour, five minutes.
Hamill and Cameron Glazewski had all of Southside's hits, with two hits apiece.
Perez allowed Orcutt American just one base runner after the third. That came on a leadoff walk to Kam in the fourth inning.
