Atascadero's hit parade began in the first inning and did not stop until the game was nearly over.

Atascadero pounded 19 hits and defeated Santa Maria 17-10 in an elimination game of the District 6 Babe Ruth 15-Year-Old Tournament at Elks Field Wednesday.

The visitors scored four runs on six hits in the first inning, then finally went out in order in the seventh and last inning - Atascadero's first without a run. By then, it was far too late for the home club.

Atascadero played itself into the championship round and will face unbeaten Orcutt at 5 p.m. Friday. If Orcutt wins, the tournament is over. If Atascadero prevails, a second game will follow approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first.

Wednesday, Atascadero leadoff batter Matt Bergdorf gave an indication of how the rest of the afternoon would go when he doubled in the first inning.

Justin Ludwig, Nic Coons and Nick Pollard followed with consecutive singles. Coons' hit brought in two runs, Pollard's scored one and Atascadero's hits kept coming.

Santa Maria pulled within 4-3 with three runs in the first. Two Atascadero errors helped the home team out.

Shane Vogt singled in a run, and another scored on Shawn Winters' groundout. Johnny Castillo scored Santa Maria's initial run on an error.

But Atascadero scored three runs on just one hit in the second inning. Atascadero led 8-5 going into the top of the fourth inning. The visitors ended any suspense as to the final outcome then by scoring six runs on three hits.

Jimmy Shannon, Atascadero's No. 9 hitter, had three hits and drove in three runs. Coons drove in three runs as well. Shannon, Justin Ludwig and Tim Purdin all had three hits.

Vinnie Victorino and Sal Mediano drove in two runs each for Santa Maria. Mediano and Shawn Winters had two hits apiece for the home club.

Santa Maria's two center fielders, Octavio Enriquez and Gabe Vasquez, each made a nice running catch.
